Anchor Text Strategy: How to Stay Safe and Still Rank

Too many exact-match anchors is one of the fastest ways to trigger a penalty. Here’s the anchor mix we use.

Anchor text tells Google what the linked page is about. Used well, it boosts rankings. Overused, it looks manipulative.

A safe starting anchor mix. We adjust it to what already ranks in your niche.

The main anchor types

  • Branded: “Dserps”
  • Naked URL: “dserps.com”
  • Generic: “click here”, “this guide”
  • Partial match: “affordable link building packages”
  • Exact match: “link building services”

A safe starting mix

For most sites we start with roughly 40 to 50% branded and URL anchors, 20 to 30% generic and natural phrases, 15 to 25% partial match and under 10% exact match. We then adjust based on what already ranks in your niche.
